Cities are engines of economic growth and development. At the same time, they often become the focus of poverty and social stratification, as well as a source of environmental pollution. This was announced at the first Assembly of the United Nations Human Settlements Program (Habitat), now taking place in the capital of Kenya, Nairobi, the head of the Maymunah Organization, Mokht Sharif, said.

The main theme of the Assembly is innovation. It is new, innovative solutions, stressed Sharif, contribute to the progressive development of cities, which will improve the quality of life of all urban residents. As an example, she cited the concept of the so-called “floating cities” - artificially created, storm-resistant archipelagoes that will drift freely in the open sea.

According to the engineers, people will be settled on special platforms with an area of 2 hectares each. The six platforms will unite into a “village”, and six villages into a “city”. Such futuristic island groups will be equipped with everything you need. Their residents will enjoy renewable energy sources, grow organic food, and eat seafood.

Floating cities, according to the UN, will help solve many problems, including overpopulation and environmental pollution.

UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed stressed that cities can no longer be built on the model of New York or Nairobi. They should be created “for people, not for cars,” she said.

“And we should not forget that cities will be constantly endangered due to the effects of climate change - rising sea levels and hurricanes. Floating cities are key to solving many problems, ”said Mohammed.
