The Japanese government has allocated US $ 2.8 million for the implementation of projects by UN agencies related to the provision of humanitarian assistance and the rehabilitation of areas affected by the conflict in eastern Ukraine.
Cooperation between the UN, Japan and Ukraine has been going on for a long time already. “Since 2015, with the financial support of the Japanese government, as part of the UN programs, more than 30 socio-economic infrastructure facilities in the Luhansk and Donetsk regions have been reconstructed, bridges, pumping stations, hospitals and clinics, rehabilitation centers and schools have been repaired,” said the UN System Coordinator in Kiev Osnat Lubrani. She added that part of the funds provided by Japan was used to develop business activities and strengthen the education sector.
Financial assistance provided in 2019 will be used to conduct professional training for residents of Ukraine affected by the conflict, including internally displaced persons. Part of the amount will go to support small businesses, as well as housing repairs for people living along the line of contact.
UN human rights defenders have repeatedly expressed concern about the serious consequences of the armed conflict for five million Ukrainians, including residents of isolated villages along the line of contact. Since 2014, at least 3,320 people have been killed during the conflict in eastern Ukraine. About nine thousand more were injured.
