The contest is opened for 1–4 year students of day–time departments of higher educational institutions of the Republicof Belarus, as well as for 1–2 year day–time post–graduate students. The contest objective is to encourage research on topics related to refugee issues.

a contest of works by students and post–graduate students devoted to topics related to refugee issues

The contest objective is to encourage research on topics related to refugee issues. The winners will be provided monthly scholarship up to 200 000 (two hundred thousand) Belarusian roubles from September to December 2008.

The contest is opened for 1–4 year students of day–time departments of higher educational institutions of the Republicof Belarus, as well as for 1–2 year day–time post–graduate students. The candidates shall submit, before 26 May 2008, the following documents to the International Non–governmental Association for Scientific Research, Information and Educational Programmes “Evolutio”, in person or by post:

— a written work on the contest topic, in Russian or Belarusian;
— a filled contest participant questionnaire (the form is appended);
— a certificate from the faculty dean’s office, stating that he/she is a student/post–graduate student.

The works shall be submitted in printed forms, as well as in electronic forms on a floppy disk or by email to: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. The work shall not exceed 20 pages (A4, 12 pt font, 2.5 cm each margin). The title sheet shall indicate the name of the work, the surname, name and patronymic name of the student/spot–graduate student, the higher education institution, the faculty and the course. Notes and references shall be arranged according to requirements applicable to scientific work.

The following contest topics are proposed:

  • Problems of forced migration and refugees in the modern world;
  • Refugees and other migrants: similarities and differences;
  • Refugee protection at international, regional and national levels;
  • Trends in development of international refugee protection mechanisms;
  • Social and economic conditions for solution of refugee problems;
  • Links between asylum and migration;
  • Mitigation of the statelessness problem;
  • Refugees and tolerance in a multinational society.

Scholarships will be awarded by the results of the review made by the commission, including representatives of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, International Non–governmental Association for Scientific Research, Information and Educational Programmes “Evolutio” and experts on the above topics, taking into consideration: the compliance of the work with the contest topics; the degree of disclosure of the analyzed topic; consistent presentation of materials; consistent style and correct use of terms; scientific urgency of the work; independent opinions and substantiated conclusions; practical significance of the work; availability of implementation proposals; adherence to arrangement requirements; and verification of the work for plagiarism. The best works will be published in the Journal of International Law and International Relations.
