Results of the students’ essay contest on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

An awards ceremony featuring winners of the students’ essay contest “The Universal Declaration of Human Rights in My Life” and an opening ceremony of an exhibition of human rights literature will be arranged on December 10, 2008, on Human Rights Day, at 14:00 pm at the 2nd floor atrium of the National Library of Belarus(116, Prospect Nezavisimosty, Minsk).

An awards ceremony featuring winners of the students’ essay contest “The Universal Declaration of Human Rights in My Life” and an opening ceremony of an exhibition of human rights literature will be arranged on December 10, 2008, on Human Rights Day, at 14:00 pm at the 2nd floor atrium of the National Library of Belarus(116, Prospect Nezavisimosty, Minsk).

The students’ essay contest “The Universal Declaration of Human Rights in My Life” dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was arranged by the UN Office in Belarus in partnership with the National public human rights protection association to raise the awareness and improve understanding by Belarusian students of the Declaration provisions, values and principles of respect for and protection of human rights. Over 250 students of 29 secondary special schools and 25 universities participated in the contest. The results will be summed up by 9 December 2008. The winners will we awarded with prizes and diplomas of the UN Office in Belarus. The best essays will be published in the UN Bulletin issued by the UN Office in Belarus and put on the website www.un.by.

The exhibition will present books and other human rights materials from the stocks of the National Library of Belarus as well as the latest publications of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

All visitors of the National Library will receive a free copy of an anniversary edition of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with a foreword by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki–moon.

The events will be attended by UN Representative in Belarus Antonius Broek, representatives of other organizations, programmes and foundations of the UN system in Belarus, Director of the National Library of Belarus Roman Motulsky, and deputy chairman of the National public human rights protection association, Boris Sinkov.

The exhibition of human rights books will be open at the hall for documents of international organizations of the National Library of Belarus.
