Minsk, October 22,  2010. Representatives of UN agencies, diplomatic missions, the Minsk Municipality and "MisnkZelenstroy" started joint work to improve the United Nations Square.

The square was given its name in 1995 in honour of the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations Organization. A memorable stone plate “The United Nations Square” in Belarusian and in English was laid to mark the 65th anniversary of UN establishment which is celebrated on October 24.

In a welcoming address, UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative in Belarus Mr. Antonius Broek stressed that “The fact that this Square — located in the capital of Belarus — was named after the United Nations represents a very symbolic gesture. It symbolizes inseparable and continuous link between the United Nations and the country of Belarus that took an active part in the negotiations during the San Francisco Conference that led to the creation of this unique intergovernmental body”.

Mr. Broek also announced the open contest of creative concepts of the monument which will be erected in the square after its reconstruction. The contest is expected to start in the nearest future. The details and full description of the contest will be soon available at the website of the UN Office and disseminated through mass media.

After greeting speeches the participants of the event planted trees along the lanes. Further improvements of the square are included in a five–year development plan of the Leninsky District of the Belarusian capital. The square which has yet been little known about is expected to become a place of honour at the city map symbolizing Belarus’ historic linkage with the United Nations Organization.

The event was attended by First Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Aleinik, “MisnkZelenstroy” General Manager Igor Kushnerevich, heads of diplomatic missions and staff of UN agencies working in Belarus.

Photos from the event are available here.

UN Reference. Belarus has a direct relation to the establishment of the United Nations Organization. On 26 June 1945 at the San Francisco Conference Belarus was among the 51 founders of UN and signed the UN Charter.

On 30 August 1945 the Belarusian parliament ratified the UN Charter. Belarus’ foreign policy activity is thus inseparably linked with the United Nations Organization.
