The environmental event featuring the planting of young oaks and larch–trees was taking place within the framework of the National Forest Week 2011 and the International Year of Forests that has been announced by the United Nations Organization. The event was jointly organized by the Ministry of Forestry, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, the United Nations Development Programme, and the UN Department of Public Information in Belarus.

The key objective of the event was to raise the awareness of government agencies, civil society, non–governmental organizations and relevant stakeholders about the need for adopting careful attitude toward the forest, which is a national treasure. In the course of the event every participant was able to make a concrete contribution to the conservation and enlargement of the country’s forest riches.

International Mother Earth Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly at its 63rd Session on April 22, 2009. The Resolution adopted upon the initiative of Bolivia underscores that the Earth and its ecosystems are our home, and in order to strike a fair balance between the economic, social and environmental needs of the current and future generations we have to foster harmony with nature and planet Earth. More than 50 UN member–states coauthored the Resolution, including Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
