Brest Сonducts a Сreative Сontest Dedicated to Forests

On May 17 Brest hosts an award ceremony for the winners of the creative works contest held among the young students of the region and dedicated to the International Year of Forest. The participants of the contest included students of secondary schools, gymnasiums, lyceums and vocational schools, submitting more than 70 works.

On May 17 Brest hosts an award ceremony for the winners of the creative works contest held among the young students of the region and dedicated to the International Year of Forest. The participants of the contest included students of secondary schools, gymnasiums, lyceums and vocational schools, submitting more than 70 works.

The contests is organized by the Education department of the Brest region executive committee, Brest regional committee for nature and environment, Brest state forestry entity, Brest city youth club “UN young friends” and UN office in Belarus.



In their unusual works – quilts, or patchworks made of colored fiber clouts – the contest participants tried to reflect the need for caring attitude to the natural reserves of one’s country, its preservation in the interests of the current and coming generations.

The winning works would be forwarded to the United Nations office on Belarus to be exhibited at mobile expos held in various localities of the country within the framework of the International Year of Forests.

In its resolution 61/193 of December 20, 2006 the General Assembly has declared 2011 to be the International Year of Forest and called the Secretariat of the United Nations Forum on Forests to be the coordinator of the Year. The resolution stressed that forests and sustainable forest management can contribute significantly to sustainable development and achieving of development goals stipulated by the Millennium Declaration.
