World Investment Report 2011 launched in Minsk

On 27 July the National press–center hosted a presentation of the World Investment Report 2011 which was organized by the UN Office in Minsk in partnership with the Ministry of Economy of Belarus. The presentation attended more than 30 media representatives including TV, print and electronic media.

UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Belarus Mr. Farid Karakhanov introducing the Report outlined that the global FDI inflows rose 5 per cent in 2010, however, that at the end of the year it was nearly 37 per cent below their peak in 2007. The recovery of FDI flows will continue in 2011 returning to the pre–crisis average.

Mr. Karakhanov highlighted that this year the report also presents original, ahead–of–curve analyses on why and how non–equity modes (NEMs) such as contract manufacturing, services outsourcing, contract farming, franchising and licensing are used by TNCs in managing their global value chains.

“Some non–equity modes have advantages for Belarus: access to international production and trade chains, domestic enterprise development, technology and skills dissemination, development of interaction between businesses on the ground of effective market competition”, noted Mr. Karakhanov.

The representative of the Ministry of Economy of Belarus Mr. Kirill Koroteev  pointed out the growth splash of FDI in Belarus from 2006 and reported Government`s plans to attract 6.5 billion $ in FDI till the end of the current year.

By tradition the event was followed by question and answers session and interviews for media.
