On October 2nd, on the 143rd anniversary of birth of Mahatma Gandhi, the leader of the movement for India’s independence and the founder of the philosophy and strategy of non–violence, and in commemoration of the International Day of Non–Violence, a ceremonial session was held at the Academy of Management under the President of the Republic of Belarus.

The event was attended by Manoj K. Bharti, the Ambassador of the Republic of India to Belarus, Antonius Broek, the UN Resident Coordinator in Belarus, Anatoly Morozevich, the Rector of the Academy, representatives of the diplomatic corps, mass media, and students of the Academy.

In his address to the youth audience Antonius Broek said: “Mahatma Gandhi tried to “persuade and not coerce his adversaries”, appealing to the fundamental morality of people, changing their behavior and consciousness without the use of physical force.

In our turbulent age, we have much to learn yet from the teachings of Gandhi. His methods have not lost their power and credibility, and against the background of conflicts and differences their topicality is high now more than ever.”

According to Resolution A/RES/61/271 of the General Assembly dated June 15, 2007 that envisages the observance of the International Day, it also serves as a pretext to “propagate the motto of non–violence, including by means of educational and advocacy work.”  The Resolution reaffirms the “universal significance of the principle of non–violence", as well as the endeavor to “affirm a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non–violence.”
