Objective of the contest: To improve the knowledge and understanding of the values and principles of respect for and protection of human rights among the students of Belarus.

Timeline for the contest: October – December 2012.

Participants: Bachelor's and Master's degree students at higher education establishments of the Republic of Belarus.

The contest is held in two nominations: “Gender Equality” and “The Rights of Vulnerable Groups.”

In their essays participants of the contest must formulate a concrete problem in the area of gender equality or rights of vulnerable groups that in their opinion exists in Belarus, and propose ways and methods of addressing it. Essays for the contest must consist of two parts: the first part (1 – 2 pages) must contain a description of the problem, and the second part (up to 4 pages) must contain a proposal on the ways and methods of addressing it. Participants of the contest may submit their essays simultaneously in both nominations.

The procedure for submitting essays: participants of the contest must submit their essays (in Russian or Belarusian) in the electronic format (an MS Word file) until the end of the day (midnight Minsk time) of November 15, 2012 to the address: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .The length of the essay must not exceed 5 pages (Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, 2.5 cm margins on each side of the page, 1.5 interval between the lines, page numbers at bottom center).  At the beginning of the essay one must indicate the first and last names of the author, the name of his/her higher education establishment, academic department and year of study, contact telephone number and email address, and the title of the essay. The name of the file with the contest essay must include the name of the nomination and the last name of the author (e.g., for the nomination “Gender Equality” – Gender_Ivanova, and for the nomination “Rights of Vulnerable Groups” – Vulnerable_Ivanova). The same name must be indicated in the subject line of the email message to which the file with the contest essay is attached.

The laureates of the contest will be awarded prizes and diplomas of the UN Country Office in the Republic of Belarus and the Raoul Wallenberg Institute. The winners of the contest – the participants who win the first five positions in either of the nominations – will receive the opportunity to participate in international educational programs on human rights that will be conducted by the Raoul Wallenberg Institute in 2013. The award ceremony for the winners of the contest will be held in Minsk on December 10, 2012 — on Human Rights Day.
