The national conference "Global Development Agenda beyond 2015 – Belarus" was held in Minsk on March 27. The event was arranged by the UN Office in the Republic of Belarus. The conference objective was to discuss development agenda beyond 2015 in the national context. This conference is part of the national consultations in Belarus. Its contribution will be seen it the final report on the country consultations published in May and the final report will feed into the global consultations.

Mr. Sanaka Samarasinha, UN Resident Coordinator in Belarus welcomed the conference participants and said - “Belarus has made great progress in achievement of MDGs. Now the task is to develop Post–2015 agenda. The United Nations is interested not only in the opinion of international agencies, governments, academia, the business community, and public organizations, but also in the people whose opinion had not been previously taken into account in decision–making at the macro–level. We hear from people that the MDGs are good but not enough. Primarily because the MDGs focus more on quantity instead of quality, more on numbers rather than the actual situation. As a result, the numbers conceal the problem of inequality, and this gap is widening. We therefore want to know opinions, suggestions and priorities of the inhabitants of the planet, including those from vulnerable groups”.

The conference was attended by representatives of public authorities, civil society, business sector and international organizations.  The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Economic Research Institute of the Ministry of Economy, ACT International Educational NGO, Institute of Philosophy of the Belarus National Academy of Sciences and Belarusian Association of UNESCO made their presentations during the conference.

In their presentations, the participants addressed the issue of the Millennium Development Goals achievement by Belarus, and proposed new development goals and agenda reflecting the present–day issues of concern for Belarus.

It is well–known that one of the key outcomes of the last year's UN Conference on Sustainable Development held in Rio de Janeiro (Rio +20) was the decision to develop a set of sustainable development goals and run open–ended consultations to determine the priorities of people around the world beyond the year 2015.

The national conference "Global Development Agenda beyond 2015 – Belarus" is the contribution of the country to the process of national consultations on development agenda beyond 2015.
