The UN Office in the Republic of Belarus, the European Union, Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, the Republican Non-governmental Association for Human Rights Protection, the Belarusian Section of the International Human Rights Society announce a student paper contest devoted to the 20th anniversary of the World Conference on Human Rights.

The UN Office in the Republic of Belarus, the European Union, Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, the Republican Non-governmental Association for Human Rights Protection, the Belarusian Section of the International Human Rights Society announce a student paper contest devoted to the 20th anniversary of the World Conference on Human Rights.

Aim of the contest: enhancing Belarusian students’ knowledge and awareness of the principles of respect and protection of human rights.

Time frame: October 16 — November 16, 2013.

Who can participate: university and MA students of the Republic of Belarus.

Contest paper themes:

  • Influence of the World Conference on Human Rights, the Vienna Declaration and Program of Action on human rights progress
  • Gender equality
  • Vulnerable population groups rights

In their papers, the participants should define a specific issue relating to the influence of the World Conference on Human Rights and the Vienna Declaration, on gender equality or safeguards for the rights of vulnerable population groups – the problems which they consider pertinent in Belarus, and also suggest ways and means to resolve them. A contest paper should consist of two parts: Part 1 (1–2 pages) must contain the description of the problem, and Part 2 (up to 4 pages) – proposals of ways and means of its resolution. The participants can submit their papers in two nominations simultaneously.

The contest participants should submit their papers (in Russian or Belarusian) in an electronic form (Word document format) till the end of day (12 p.m. Minsk time) November 15, 2013, at the following e–mail address: This email address is being protected from spambots. The paper length must not exceed 5 pages (Times New Roman, 12 pt font, 2.5 cm. margins from each side, 1.5 line interval, page numbers – at the centre position of bottom page). At the beginning of the paper, the author’s first and last name should appear, as well as the name of the university, faculty and year, phone number and e–mail, and also the title of the paper. The file name for contest paper document should include the nomination and author’s name (e.g., for the nomination “Influence of the World Conference on Human Rights, the Vienna Declaration and Program of Action on human rights progress” — Conference_Ivanova, for the nomination ”Gender equality” – Gender_Ivanova, and for the nomination  ”Vulnerable population groups rights” – Vulnerable_Ivanova).The electronic letter to which the contest paper document file is attached, should have the same heading. 

The contest winners will be awarded prizes and diplomas of the UN Office in the Republic of Belarus and Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rightsand Humanitarian Law. The contest winners, the first three top papers in each nomination, will get a chance to enroll in the international human rights training programs which Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rightsand Humanitarian Law will be carrying out in 2014. The awards ceremony for the contest winners is planned for December 10, 2013, on Human Rights Day.
