On October 16 — November 16, 2013, the UN Office in the Republic of Belarus, the Council of Europe, Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law and the Republican Non–Governmental Association for Human Rights Protection (the Belarusian Section of the International Society for Human Rights) held a student paper contest devoted to the 20th anniversary of the World Conference on Human Rights.

On October 16 — November 16, 2013, the UN Office in the Republic of Belarus, the Council of Europe, Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law and the Republican Non–Governmental Association for Human Rights Protection (the Belarusian Section of the International Society for Human Rights) held a student paper contest devoted to the 20th anniversary of the World Conference on Human Rights.

University and MA students from all regions of the Republic of Belarus took part in the contest which aimed at enhancing Belarusian students’ knowledge and awareness of the principles of human rights respect and protection.

In their essays, the participants of the contest analyzed the influence of the World Conference on Human Rights and the adopted Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action on the development of human rights, considered the issues of gender equality and safeguards for the rights of vulnerable population groups and suggested their own ways and methods to resolve them in the context of Belarus.

The following students became winners in nomination “Gender equality”:

Olga Dashkovets, Belarusian State University, Department of International Relations, fourth year student;
Marina Klimova, Gomel State University named after Fr. Skaryna, Department of Economics, fifth year student;
Anna Khatsuleva, Gomel State University named after Fr. Skaryna, Department of Economics, fifth year student.

The following students became winners in nomination “Vulnerable population groups rights”:

Victoriya Zhlobovich, Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics, Department of Engineering and Economics, first year student;
Inga Medvedeva, Academy of Public Administration under the Aegis of the President of the Republic of Belarus, Department of Management, second year student;
Nataliya Yazubets, Brest State University named after A. Pushkin, Law Department, third year student.

The following students became winners in nomination “Influence of the World Conference on Human Rights, the Vienna Declaration and Program of Action on human rights progress”:

Yelizaveta Zhuk, Belarusian State University, Department of International Relations, fourth year student;
Pavel Pernikov, Brest State University named after A. Pushkin, Law Department, fourth year student;
Yekaterina Yashchuk, Belarusian National Technical University, Department of Marketing, Management and Entrepreneurship, third year student.

At the end of December 2013, the winners of the student paper contest will take part in the awards ceremony at the UN Office in the Republic of Belarus. Nine Belarusian students will be awarded diplomas of the UN Office and will also get a chance to participate in the winter session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg on 27–29 January 2014.
