The workshop participants discussed the possibility of the signing and ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. “At the moment Belarus is ready to join the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities,” expressed his opinion Mr. Sanaka Samarasinha, UN Resident Coordinator in Belarus. In his speech he pointed out that 158 countries signed the Convention, 141 nations ratified it and Belarus so far remains the only state in Europe that hasn’t yet signed and ratified this international instrument. According to the UN Resident Coordinator in Belarus, while a year ago our country was not ready to sign and ratify the Convention, today, however, positive developments can be observed.

The United Nations General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2006. The aim of the document is to promote, protect and ensure full and equal realization of all human rights and freedom for all persons with disabilities and to promote respect for their inherent dignity.
