Maxim Mirnyi lends his support to the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace

On April 6 the world community celebrates the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace which was established by the UN General Assembly last year. In its resolution the General Assembly calls on countries, the UN family, relevant international organizations, sports organizations, civil society, including non–governmental organizations, and the private sector as well as all other stakeholders to cooperate to raise awareness of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.

The world famous Belarusian tennis player, Olympic champion Maxim Mirnyi is known not only for his achievements in the world of tennis but in 2002 he was appointed the National Goodwill Ambassador on HIV/AIDS in the Republic of Belarus. From 2002 to 2004 he collaborated with the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) in the area of HIV/AIDS prevention at the country level. As the Goodwill Ambassador Maxim Mirnyi made great efforts to promote healthy lifestyle, mobilization of resources to counter the HIV/AIDS epidemic within the priorities of the United Nations Organization in Belarus.

In November 2011 Maxim Mirnyi was appointed the Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Belarus. In his role as a goodwill ambassador he continues his cooperation with the United Nations to promote healthy lifestyle and to assist children facing hardship and children most in need of protection, help and care.
