On the occasion of the United Nations Day which is celebrated every year on October 24, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Vladimir Makei, hosted a meeting with the heads of the United Nations agencies residing in the Republic of Belarus.
On the occasion of the United Nations Day which is celebrated every year on October 24, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus, Vladimir Makei, hosted a meeting with the heads of the UN agencies residing in the Republic of Belarus.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), the UN Department of Public Information (DPI), the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the World Health Organization (WHO), the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), World Bank, International Finance Corporation (IFC), International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative/ UNFPA Representative in Belarus, Sanaka Samarasinha, addressing the Minister, underlined that Belarus succeeded in implementing almost all the Millennium Development Goals which the UN member states have agreed to achieve by 2015. These goals include reducing poverty, reducing child mortality, combating epidemics, as well as extension of development cooperation. Sanaka Samarasinha thanked the Minister and the Belarusian government for the fruitful work with the UN agencies and the country's active role in the global initiatives of the organization.
From his side, the Minister stated that the fight against human trafficking, sustainable energy, traditional family, middle-income countries had nowadays become the most important issues for the Republic of Belarus and the UN. The participants of the meeting also discussed the activities of the UN agencies in the Republic of Belarus, as well as the prospects for further cooperation.
