December 10, 2018 marked the 70th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), which for the first time in the history of the world proclaimed the equal and inalienable rights of every person. To celebrate the Declaration anniversary, the United Nations in Belarus in cooperation with the partners from state institutions and academia held a number of special events.
At the initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus and the United Nations in Belarus, for the first time in many years, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was published in the Belarusian language.
The text of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in the Belarusian language was proofread by the Research Center of Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. The presentation of memorable copies of the Declaration was held on December 10, 2018, the Human Rights Day, at the National Library of Belarus.
The ceremony was attended by the UN Resident Coordinator in the Republic of Belarus Joanna Kazana-Wisniowiecki, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus Andrei Dapkiunas, Vice-Chairman of the Permanent Commission on Human Rights, National Relations and the Media of the National Assembly Valentina Razhanets and Director of the National Library of Belarus Roman Motulsky.
In her presentation speech, Ms. Joanna Kazana-Wisniowiecki noted: “Throughout the year, the United Nations has worked with Belarus on promoting and integrating the human rights standards outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights into domestic law and practice. We have worked with Government and civil society in many areas that impact human rights, including supporting the Government in implementing its 2016-2019 human rights plan.”
A copy of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in the Belarusian language was passed on to the National Library of Belarus.
After the ceremony, a round table for academic, educational and public institutions of Belarus “Education in the field of human rights” dedicated to the 70th UDHR anniversary was held.
