On Nelson Mandela International Day, which marks 100 years since his birth, a special event was held in the international children’s language camp in Uzda.
This year’s Nelson Mandela’s Anniversary coincides with the commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and Mandela was an outstanding advocate for human rights, human dignity and justice.
UN official, who opened the event, addressed the camp participants from Belarus and the Russian Federation and volunteer teachers from France, Germany, Turkey, China, India. Young people prepared and staged theatrical shows and performances dedicated to Nelson Mandela’s life and work, read poetry and sang improvised karaoke. The most active camp participants who performed well in implementing social projects for the public good received prizes and memorabilia from the UN Office in Belarus.
In his welcome address, Viktor Radivinoski from the UN Department of Public Information in Belarus urged to join the global campaign on Nelson Mandela’s birthday and to give 67 minutes of their time to community service and in doing so to pay tribute to the 67 years of Nelson Mandela’s service to humanity.
The English Language and Culture Bridge project is implemented by the NGO “Belarusian Association of UNESCO Club”s based on Uzda State Recreational Boarding School. The language camp aims to create enabling environment for communication, in-depth study of spoken English, to promote the concepts of tolerance and mutual understanding among people by using the English language as a bridge, and to participate in cultural and social events, which help improve the understanding of national cultures.
