List of rare biotopes of Belarus is proposed for public discussion

The list of rare biotopes* of national and international significance and principles of their identification are developed in Belarus. The documents are prepared within UNDP/GEF project “Mainstreaming Biodiversity Conservation into Territorial Planning Policies and Practices in Belarus”. National implementing partner of the Project is Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus (MNREP).

The list of rare biotopes of national and international significance and principles of their identification are developed by experts of the Institute of Experimental Botany named after V.F. Kuprevich of NAS of Belarus and the Scientific and Practical Center of NAS of Belarus for Bioresources. All interested parties are invited to discuss the document.

Natalia Minchenko, Head of Department of Biological and Landscape Diversity of MNREP: “Conservation of biodiversity means not only conservation of certain flora or fauna species, but first of all conservation of their habitats, or biotopes. Within UNDP/GEF project “Biodiversity” we make an important step on the way of concept “biotope” introduction into Belarusian environmental legislation”.

Previously project experts analyzed Belarusian legislation for conformance to international practice of biotopes protection. As a result the draft legislation was prepared and submitted to the Parliament for a decision.

International experience and particularly EU Habitat Directive were the basis for development of the list of rare biotopes. 43 types of rare biotopes corresponding to the Directive are described in Belarus.

Vladimir Koltunov, “Biodiversity” Project Manager: “After public discussion the list of rare biotopes will be published as manual "Rare biotopes of the Republic of Belarus". It will be used by experts of environmental protection, forestry and land management, land-users in their practice”.

The list of rare biotopes (in Russian) can be downloaded here: list of rare biotopes, or at project web-site http://www.biodiversity.by/eng/ (section “Materials for discussion”). Please send your proposals by email till 10th April 2012.
