19 new projects approved within CORE Programme

Minsk, 20 November 2006 - 19 projects have been upheld by the Approval Board (AP) of the CORE (Cooperation for Rehabilitation) International Programme at its sitting held on 16 November in Stolin of the Brest region. Altogether 124 projects worth about EURO 9.0 million have been approved since the beginning of the Programme implementation.

The AP sitting was attended by heads of the Bragin, Chechersk, Slavgorod and Stolin district executive committees, representatives of non-governmental organizations of France, Germany, Ireland, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, embassies of EU member states, OSCE and UN offices in Belarus. Minister of Emergency Situations of Belarus Enver Bariev participated in the AP sitting as a specially invited guest.

Two of the approved projects – a thematic project “Healthy Family” and a small-scale project “Preservation and Popularization of Folk Spiritual Culture of the Bragin District in the Post-Chernobyl Period” – have already received guarantees of financial support from the US Agency for International Development (USAID), United Nations Development Programme and Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.

On 15 November, the day before the Board sitting, the town of Stolin hosted a meeting of the Preparation and Assessment Committee (PAC). Within two sessions, initiators and coordinators of the projects presented practical outcomes, discussed problems and perspectives of the CORE project activities in the Stolin district. The PAC meeting participants welcomed the 34th signatory of the CORE Programme Declaration of Principles: the document was signed by deputy chair of the Brest regional executive committee Viktor Sakovsky.

The Brest region has become the third affected area of Belarus, which joined the Declaration of Principles. Earlier this year, in October-November, the Declaration was signed by representatives of the Mogilev and the Gomel regional executive committees.
