10 March 2010: February, 25 in European Union Headquarters (Brussels), three best EU projects have been determined in the sphere of communications, PR and press in the framework of EuropeAID annual conference. Two depleted peatlands are successfully renaturalised in the Vitebsk Region by UNDP/GEF project

11 December 2009: At the beginning of December 2009 the UNDP/GEF project “Renaturalization and Sustainable Management of Peatlands in Belarus to Combat Land Degradation, Ensure Conservation of Globally Valuable Biodiversity and Mitigate Climate Change” has completed works on renaturalisation and stabilisation of the hydrological regime at depleted peatland “Osinovskoye–1” (2131 ha) in the Dubrovensky District, Vitebsk Region. One month earlier construction works have been completed at “Osinovskoye–1” peatland (1189,3 ha).   More...

07 December 2009: On December 4–5, under the joint EU/UNDP project, the two–day International Scientific and Practical Conference “Early diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitation of patients with thyroid cancer” was held.
Assembly hall of the restaurant “Seventh Heaven” hotel “Minsk” has gathered more than 200 participants and guests from all over the Republic of Belarus, as well as the world's leading scientists in the field of diagnosis and treatment of thyroid diseases.   More...

A National Cinema Action dedicated to the World AIDS Day has gathered over 7,500 viewers

03 December 2009: Yesterday 17 towns of Belarus hosted a cinema action dedicated to the World AIDS Day. The action included the showing of thematic videos and the feature film And the Band Played On. The event was held in the frameworks of the UNDP project "Prevention and Treatment of HIV/AIDS in the Republic of Belarus" funded by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.   More...
UNDP awards Sharapova scholarships in Belarus

17 November 2009: Geneva/Minsk/New York, 17 November 2009 – The United Nations Development Programme marked International Students Day by awarding five–year university scholarships to three students in Belarus in two separate ceremonies. The scholarships are funded by tennis champion Maria Sharapova as part of a wider UNDP effort to help overcome the legacy of the Chernobyl nuclear accident of 1986. The students come from Chernobyl–affected areas of Belarus and will pursue degrees in fine arts, two at the Belarusian State Academy of Arts and one at the Belarusian State University.   More...
The Human Rights Project rolls out its results

21 October 2009: A roll–out of results of the project  “Promotion of a wider application of the international human rights standards in the administration of justice in Belarus” took place yesterday in Minsk. The project, funded by the European Union, was implemented by the United Nations Development Programme, United Nations Children’s Fund and the Ministry of Justice of Belarus between April 2007 and September 2009.   More...

Human Development Report 2009 presented in Minsk

07 October 2009: Yesterday the National Press Center of the Republic of Belarus hosted a presentation of the Human Development Report 2009 “Overcoming Barriers: Human mobility and development” commissioned by the United Nations Development Programme. The report breaks a new ground in the study of both internal and international migration. A playground in Vetka is open under EU-UNDP post-Chernobyl project

07 October 2009: A children's playground near a 60–apartment house located in the center of the town of Vetka (Gomel Region) was fully renovated under the EC–UNDP joint project. The official opening of the playground was held on 5 October with participation of UNDP Resident Representative in Belarus, Mr. Antonius Broek, Head of the Delegation of the European Commission to Ukraineand Belarus, Ambassador José Manuel Pinto Teixeira, representatives of the local authorities.   More...
Minsk Hosts International Conference on Problems of Penitentiary Medicine

10 September 2009: The 4th International Scientific and Practical Conference “Challenges of the Penitentiary Medicine. Belarus will receive almost ˆ 24 million to fight HIV/AIDS

23 July 2009: Belarus will receive 23.8 million EUROs to prevent HIV and reduce AIDS–related mortality rate. An agreement to this end was sighed today between the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and the United Nations Development Programme. The agreement was also sealed by vice–premier of Belarus Vladimir Potupchik. The grant will be implemented by UNDP together with the Ministry of Health of Belarus.   More...

Maria Sharapova Foundation Scholarships are Open for Application

15 July 2009: Belarusian State University and Belarusian State Academy of Arts have announced a competition for Maria Sharapova Foundation scholarships. This is a joint initiative of the Maria Sharapova Foundation and the United Nations Development Programme, where she serves as Goodwill Ambassador. The scholarships will provide financial support for talented young people from Chernobyl–affected regions.   More...
An eco-educational center opened in Sporovsky Nature Reserve

26 June 2009: New opportunities for development of ecological tourism in Belarusian Polesie were provided with the opening of an eco–educational center on the premises of the Sporovsky National biological reserve. Yesterday, the village Vysokoye (Berioza District of Brest Region) hosted an official ceremony of opening the center established under the UNDP/GEF project “Catalyzing sustainability of the wetland protected area system in Belarusian Polesie” and the GEF Small Grants Programme.   More...
Family Health Project Completed

23 June 2009: The “Family Health” joint project of the UNDP, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the Ministry of Emergencies of Belarus was officially completed yesterday in Stolin (Brest Region) within the final Health Fair. The long-term objective of the project was to improve health of population leaving in the Chernobyl-affected communities of Stolin District.   More...

Obolskoye Peatbog Restored under UNDP/GEF Project

19 May 2009: Another peatbog was restored under the joint project of the United Nations Development Programme and the Global Environmental Facility on renaturalization and sustainable management of peatlands in Belarus. The depleted Obol–1 peatland in Shumilino district of Vitebsk region was the eighths one in the row of degraded peatbogs rehabilitated under the UNDP/GEF project.   More...

Training Center for Tuberculosis Opens in Orsha

10 April 2009: A tuberculosis information and training Center for medical staff of the prison service was opened yesterday in the city of Orsha(Vitebskregion) on the premises of correctional facility No. 12 which houses TB hospital. UNDP/GEF Project Embarks on the Osveiskoye Peatland Rehabilitation

03 February 2009: In January 2009, rehabilitation of the degraded peatland Osveiskoye started in Verhnedvinsk district of Vitebsk region. The area hydrological regime is to be restored through cascade damming by a drainage network. The works are to be completed within three months. The project presupposes construction of 11 dams and creation of a system of shallow reservoirs with regulated water depth.   More...

26 January 2009: A new training centre for medical personnel was officially opened yesterday at the premises of the Scientific and Research Institute of Pulmonology and Phthisiology of the Ministry of Health of Belarus. The Minsk District Becomes the First Pilot Site of a Partner Project on Telemedicine

03 December 2008: A new step in the development of telemedicine has been taken under the UN Global Compact. Presentations of the mostly asked-for administrative procedures are put on the Internet

05 October 2008: Since now on, any citizen of Belarus using the Internet has an opportunity without leaving home to find out where to apply for one or another permit or certificate, which documents to submit, and what expenses to cover. Web presentations of certain administrative procedures, mostly asked for by Belarus’ citizens with state administrative bodies, were made public for the first time on 3 October in Kirovsk (Mogilev region) during a workshop “Positive practice of administrative procedures regulation in Belarus” arranged by the UNDP project.   More...
Maria Sharapova launches programme of scholarships for youth from Chernobyl-affected areas in Belarus

18 September 2008: Geneva/ Minsk 18 September 2008 Tennis star Maria Sharapova announced today that she is launching a $210,000 scholarship programme for students from Chernobyl–affected areas of Belarus. The programme is a joint initiative of the Maria Sharapova Foundation and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), where she serves as Goodwill Ambassador. The scholarships will enable 12 talented young people from Chernobyl–affected regions to follow a full course of studies at two leading universities in Belarus.   More...

Creativity Changes the Approach to Drug Prevention Activities

19 May 2008: 50 experts representing educational institutions of the Mogilev region learned advanced methods of prevention of drug abuse among young people during a workshop, which was arranged from 14 to 16 May in Mogilev. The workshop “Interactive Methods and Drama Art in the System of Drug Prevention” was conducted under one of the components of the “Programme for the Prevention of Drug Abuse and the Fight against Drug Trafficking in Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova” (BUMAD-3) funded by the European Commission and Implemented by UNDP. Japan Provides 1.5 million US Dollars to Enhance Human Security in the Chernobyl Affected Area of Belarus

27 November 2007: Minsk, 27 November 2007, Human Development Report 2007/2008 entitled “Fighting climate change: Human solidarity in a divided world” was launched today at the National Press Center. Construction of Water Regulating Facilities to Restore Depleted Peatlands has Started

17 October 2007: In Belarus, UNDP/GEF project on restoration of depleted peatlands has started construction of regulating facilities at project sites “Dokudovskoe”, “Bartenikha”, “Miranka”, which had formerly undergone peat extraction. Construction of water regulation facilities, fire preventing channels and ponds will help decrease the risk of peatlands fires, reduce CO2 emissions, restore habitat for globally valuable flora and fauna species and solve significant ecological problems.   More...
Alexander Patlis Keeps the Promise

16 October 2007: Belarus’ Star Team for fighting AIDS continues to do its best to keep the promises made in support of the global campaign “Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise”. The singer Alexander Patlis is one of the Star Team members. His promise was to help HIV-positive children. The proceeds gained from the last concert under the “Pure Heart” project inspired and organized by Alexander Patlis will partially go to help HIV-positive children.   More...

Extension of the UNDP Sustainable Development Project

20 January 2004: The Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Belarus and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) have decided to extend the UNDP Project "Development and Internalization of the National Sustainable Development Strategy within the Context of the Republic of Belarus" for the first six months of 2004. In 2004 the main activities of the project will include publication of NSDS - 2020 after it is approved by the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus and organization of the international conference on sustainable development.   More...

03 November 2003: The international conference “Current information technologies and social importance of libraries” was held in Minsk on 29-30 October. The conference was sponsored by the Belarusian Library Association, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Belarus and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Belarus. 20 August 2003: Mr. Neil Buhne (Canada) has been working as a UNDP Resident Representative/UN Resident Coordinator in Belarus since 5 July 1999. Before assignment to Belarus he had worked for UNDP in progressively more responsible positions for 14 years in five countries, most recently as UNDP Deputy Resident Representative for Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei-Darussalam, and before that in Pakistan, Bhutan, Sudan and Sri Lanka. Mr. Buhne holds a Master’s Degree in International Affairs from the Norman Patterson School of International Affairs, Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada. Next Mr. Buhne’s assignment within UN system will be the post of UNDP Resident Representative/UN Resident Coordinator in Bulgaria.   More...

UNDP Chernobyl Project - Developmental Approach in Action

14 January 2002: In late 2001, the UN Development Programme and the Belarus State Committee for Chernobyl launched a project that can help bring more resources and enhance Belarus' international partnerships in helping individuals affected by the Chernobyl disaster. Although more than fifteen years have passed since the accident, the need for the project is great. At present, one in five Belarusians continues to live in areas contaminated by radiation. The problems faced by these people, some of which are directly linked by radiation, are compounded by the feeling of insecurity and concern for their health and their future. Opinion polls suggest however, that the majority still link their future with their own communities and do not wish to move. Therefore, they continue to be in need of assistance to help normalise their lives.   More...
