Project Number:

BYE/01/003

Project Title:

BYE/01/003 Strengthening Partnerships and Resource Mobilization Mechanisms to Mitigate the Chernobyl Disaster Consequences

Status:

Completed projects

Project Objective & Brief Description:

The project aimed at mitigating the negative human consequences of the Chernobyl disaster in Belarus by supporting the sustainable development of the affected communities and by facilitating aid coordination and resource mobilization for this purpose.

Approximately one-fourth of Belarus's territory was affected by radioactive fallout-impacting on the lives of over 2 million inhabitants- including approximately 500,000 children and teenagers. The most vulnerable groups in the affected areas face a complex and progressive downward spiral of living conditions compounded by psychological depression, health disorders, environmental threats and diminishing opportunities for economic self-sufficiency.

Having worked closely with the Belarus State Chernobyl Committee and a soon-to-be created Public Advisory Council within, the project helped facilitate local self-help initiatives, as well as domestic and international partnerships that addressed the long-term economic, socio- psychological, environmental and health consequences of the Chernobyl disaster. Emphasis on these initiatives was focused upon local development, rehabilitation and self-help.
