About: UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people.
UNHCR works to ensure that everybody has the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge, having fled violence, persecution, war or disaster at home.
UNHCR in Belarus: For over 20 years, UNHCR Representation in Belarus has been in operation to assist its persons of concern – mostly people fleeing conflict or persecution in Ukraine, Syria, Afghanistan, Georgia, and Iraq.
Belarus, alongside 142 State Parties to 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol, has international obligations related to protection of refugees. Specifically, the Government of Belarus is to safeguard:
- everybody’s right to apply for asylum,
- protection against refoulment,
- respect for refugees’ rights.
The role of UNHCR in the country is to advise and support the efforts of the Government. At the same time, UNHCR Representation works to improve asylum space in the country, promote tolerance to facilitate integration, and develop durable solutions for forcibly displaced persons, with a focus on education and employment. Building the capacity of the Government and local non-governmental organizations to deal with refugee and migrant-related issues is the main means of advancing these goals.
Moreover, UNHCR Representation in Belarus strives to engage the business sector into humanitarian work. Throughout the years, prominent international and Belarusian companies have supported UNHCR’s persons of concern through financial and in-kind donations. UNHCR is grateful for the generous support of the donors who have contributed to the operation: Priorbank, Fashion House, Danone, as well as Belarusian businesses and individual donors.
